Step 1 — March 1–30: Applications

  1. Obtain your NPI number via NPPES

    • Use “student” taxonomy and school address as business/practice address
  2. Submit your NCMB application

    • Tip: Applications are processed in the order they are submitted — apply early!

  3. Authorize NCCPA information release


Step 2 — April 1–7: Fingerprints

Location: Forsyth Sheriff Fingerprinting (M-F 8:30am - 3:30pm)

  1. Obtain fingerprints — can take 8–10 weeks to process
  2. Bring both required forms

Goal by Graduation: Have everything submitted and received/processed by NCMB — except your Graduation and NCCPA verifications.


Step 3 — May/June: Graduation

  1. Study for the PANCE
  2. Graduate!
    • Your PA program must send graduation verification to NCMB

Step 4 — PANCE

  1. Take the PANCE
  2. Pass the PANCE ✓
  3. Ensure NCCPA sends your PANCE certification to NCMB

Waiting period — things are processing…
You will receive a series of updates regarding your application

  • NCCPA credentials received
  • Application has moved to quality assurance review

Step 5 — NC Licensed!

  1. Congratulations!
  2. Update your NPI taxonomy: StudentPhysician Assistant
  3. Now apply for your DEA license

Step 6 — DEA License

Do NOT apply for DEA until you have your NC state license in hand.

DEA CSA Registration Online

  • NC does not require any additional DEA specific forms beyond your state license
  • Complete the required 8-hour Opioid CME (an option: free via NEJM)

Step 7 — Starting Your Job

  1. Submit NC Intent to Practice form to NCMB
    • Sometime your job will do this for you - verify
  2. Update your NPI with your new practice/business address
