Neuroendocrine Tumor Subtype

  • Most commonly caused by carcinoid tumors (neuroendocrine tumors that secrete serotonin, histamine, catecholamine, prostaglandins, peptides, and other vasoactive substances)
  • Sx: skin flushingdiarrhea, wheezing
  • Dx: 24-hour urinary excretion of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid
  • Tx: Somatostatin analogs such as octreotide, pasireotide, and lanreotide.
